for the glee ep. on lady gaga
The episode will see the glee club separate into two groups, with the girls and Kurt (Chris Colfer) performing Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance", and the rest of the boys performing a Kiss number. "Bad Romance" took six hours to film, with series creator Ryan Murphy, who also directed the episode, describing it as "big and athletic and hard." Michele damaged her knee from exertion during the performance. As well as allowing Glee the rights to her songs, Lady Gaga also loaned the series her costume designer to recreate her signature looks. Murphy stated that, because of the elaborate staging and costuming, the performance of "Bad Romance" was the show's most expensive number to date. The impetus for the Lady Gaga tribute in the episode comes from glee club member Tina Cohen-Chang, with actress Jenna Ushkowitz explaining: "Tina in the Gaga episode has a little bit of a problem expressing herself. She gets in trouble for the way she dresses. So she has to go through a little bit of a change for a little while. And therefore you will see some Gaga in there. She's slowly coming out of her box. Making her way out of her shell."[4] The Kiss number the boys will perform is "Beth", which features Cory Monteith on drums.[5] The episode will also include an acoustic performance of Lady Gaga's "Poker Face", performed by glee club member Rachel (Lea Michele) and rival glee club director Shelby Corcoran (Idina Menzel).[6]
Recurring guest star Mike O'Malley appears in the episode as Kurt's father, Burt Hummel, sharing a scene with Colfer and Monteith which Colfer has described as the most emotional scene of the series thus far, explaining: "Reading it on paper I had no idea it was going to be that intense. Once I got into it, then I kind of realised, 'Oh, there's such a bigger meaning behind this. Oh my God, this is so dramatic'."[1]
